Saenger Theatre Pensacola 100th Anniversary
A Little Fun Fact About Me
When I'm not working Real Estate (my first passion) I'm at the Pensacola Saenger Theatre (my second passion) working as an Usher Supervisor. I absolutely love the Theatre and we are so lucky to have this venue here on our doorsteps where we can see Symphony, Ballet, Opera, Broadway Shows, Bands and Comedians just to name a few....
This year marks a monumental milestone for Pensacola's cultural scene as the Saenger Theatre, affectionately known as the "Grand Dame of Palafox," celebrates its 100th anniversary. Since opening its doors in 1925, the Saenger has been a cornerstone of the community, hosting countless performances and events that have enriched the city's artistic landscape.
A Century of Entertainment
Constructed in 1925 at a cost of $500,000, the Saenger Theatre was built on the site of the former Pensacola Opera House, which had been heavily damaged by the hurricane of 1916. Materials salvaged from the old structure, including bricks and wrought iron, were incorporated into the new building, symbolizing a bridge between the past and the future. Originally designed for vaudeville acts and silent films, the theatre quickly became a hub for entertainment in the region.
Over the decades, the Saenger has witnessed the evolution of the performing arts, transitioning from silent movies to "talkies," and eventually to hosting live concerts, ballets, operas, and Broadway shows. Its stage has been graced by numerous renowned artists, making it a cherished venue for both performers and audiences alike.
Centennial Celebrations
To commemorate this centenary, the Saenger Theatre has organized a series of events that pay homage to its rich history and enduring legacy. The festivities kick off with a grand reopening on April 2, 2025, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and birthday cake to celebrate the theatre's anniversary.
The celebrations continue on April 6, 2025 (due to inclement weather this has been rescheduled for 24 May 2025) , with a vibrant street party from noon to 6 p.m. in front of the theatre. This free event will showcase performances by local non-profit organizations, including Ballet Pensacola, the Pensacola Opera, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Civic Band, and the Pensacola Children's Chorus. Attendees can also enjoy food trucks, merchandise stalls, and captivating side shows featuring fire breathers, balloon artists, and more.
Adding to the day's festivities, the Saenger will host two free screenings of the 1925 silent film "The Phantom of the Opera," accompanied by live organ music. These screenings are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., offering audiences a nostalgic cinematic experience reminiscent of the theatre's early days. Tickets can be claimed at the Box Office in advance or at the door while supplies last.
